All adsorbent desiccants—activated alumina, silica gel, molecular sieve—gradually decay in regenerative compressed air dryers. Desiccants are subjected to hydrothermal aging and mechanical stress during regeneration. Over time these forces diminish the moisture retaining capacity of the adsorbent material. Further, oil contamination occurs when pre-filters are not adequately maintained, permanently fouling desiccant beds. Typically, a bed of adsorbent desiccant lasts 3 to 5 years before needing replacement.
Van Air offers free testing of activated alumina, silica gel and 4A molecular sieve to both existing and prospective customers. The process is simple:
Contact Van Air customer service for an authorization number
Mail a one cup desiccant sample to Van Air in Lake City, PA
Van Air service technicians use a heat re-activator and humidity chamber to measure the moisture retaining capacity of the sample
Van Air delivers a report to the customer describing the condition of the desiccant material
To discuss the requirements of any application, contact a Van Air engineer.
