Silica Gel Adsorbent Desiccant

Van Air silica gel adsorbent desiccant beads consist of 97% silicon dioxide and 3% alumina. The bead shape, uniform particle size and high bulk density combine to ensure optimum air flow without channeling. Also, minimal dusting occurs within the tower of the dryer due to the physical characteristics of this adsorbent desiccant.

An immense network of inter-connecting microscopic pores exists within a single granule of silica gel. This network of pores attracts and retains moisture via physical adsorption and capillary condensation. Even once the silica gel adsorbent desiccant has become completely saturated, the beads appear to be and feel dry to the touch.

Van Air silica gel is available in two variations; indicating and non-indicating. Our indicating silica gel adsorbent desiccant beads are impregnated with cobalt chloride to make their appearance blue. As the adsorbent desiccant beads begin to adsorb moisture, the color of the desiccant beads will change from blue to pink. Our indicating silica gel adsorbent desiccant is used when a visual warning is needed to show that the adsorbent desiccant needs to be regenerated or replaced.

Van Air non-indicating silica gel desiccant beads are light brown and translucent. Our non-indicating silica gel adsorbent desiccant performs in the same manner as our indicating silica gel desiccant except there is no change in color when the non-indicating silica gel is saturated.

Van Air silica gel will fracture in the presence of liquid water. Therefore, it must be protected by a 10% to 15% pre-bed of activated alumina adsorbent desiccant on the inlet side of the desiccant bed. This layer of activated alumina desiccant will act as a water buffer between the air dryer inlet and the silica gel adsorbent desiccant.

Dew Points to -40° F and lower may be achieved with silica gel adsorbent desiccant depending on the air dryer design and operating conditions.
